I think it’s obvious what he’s laughing at. With the women out of the house he can meet up with Scooby and the rest of the gang and solve them some mysteries.
So, what does everyone think: If Mark does know Jan’s secret, what’s the likelihood that the two of them are, at some point, going to succumb to the temptation of role-playing Miss Melee seducing her handsome mechanic and having a torrid affair behind his family’s back? More importantly, how will Jackie react when she learns that her idol is having an affair with her dad?
I think he prefers the role-play of “I’m such a dunce I can’t see through my wife’s paper thin disguise.” It does seem to get him action when it comes up (see issue 3, page 16).
Heck, he married a superhero – he doesn’t need his wife to tell him anything to know his daughter is gonna be of similar ilk. He is probably relieved they are working together – if Jackie was trying to vig on her own she’d be in much worse danger than with an experienced mentor by her side.
The general consensus is that he’s an ex-mad scientist/gadgeteer-for-hire who went straight after (a) developing a crush on Miss Melee and (b) because he felt it was inappropriate to continue with a fiancée and, later, a wife and a baby on the way.
FWIW, I like the idea of Mark being the Meleeverse’s equivalent of the Nolanverse Lucius Fox – The man who ultimately makes the more complex toys a reality.
I’ve been thinking of him as “Q”… from the old James Bond movies, not from ST:TNG. (although, he does seem as pleased with himself as Picard’s “Q”)
His “Heroes ride for free” policy might not just apply to Miss Melee. He might be secretly supplying vehicles for all the superheroes.
Let’s just hope that he doesn’t share Q’s taste for high-end sports cars. (What was Q thinking, giving Bond an Aston Martin DB5? Not to mention all the other works of vehicular art that he gave Bond after that.)
Re-reading this, I think it is funny how Mark in panel 2 realises that Jackie is fumbling the ball about why she wants to go out and actually feeds her an excuse. It’s that fact that suggests he knows something is up.
This puts all those times Jan was being a part time vigilante around the corner in a completely different light. I wonder if he got really good at feeding Jan excuses over the years.
I just found this comic and took a while to read it through.
Of course Mark knows! He created the Melee-Cycle, dated Janice, married her, and had a kid with her. After knowing her for almost two decades he wouldn’t recognize his wife’s voice, curve of her face and bottom, scent? and would Janice have bred with such a dullard?
(Besides, did you read his dialogue in the first issue? (“Gasp! What if the Ninjas took her?” “Oh where could she be?”) I’m surprised he didn’t get handed a Miss Piggy Award for ham acting!
Although it does make me think of Janice and jackie as “dumb jocks” who don’t realize Mark’s on to them.
Yeah, totally! I can see the plot twist coming up… the villians are being sponsored / manipulated / supplied by some mastermind behind the scenes… who turns out to be Mark himself who has been on to the two, and has orchestrated the whole thing for laugh’s sake. Or something.
I would love for it to come out he knows their secret in like this super casual way. Like, the girls come back one day/night after superheroing and he’s like “Saw the battle on tv. Looked pretty fierce. Jackie, looks to me like your [gadget] had a bit of a glitch there. Maybe we can work on it tomorrow.” 🙂
At some point he is going to be working on the Melee Cycle (or cycles when he decides Jackie is ready) and will casually ask Jan to pick up milk on the way home.
Im kinda waiting for a reveal that it turns out that dad…is not a superhero…but actually knows a bunch as he helps them by making and repairing gear like he did for Jan back in the day.
He obviously knows the two ladies in his life are superheroes but the question I have is: how much longer is he gonna milk this before he calls them out on it
He knows.
Yup, pretty much. Dad’s no dummy.
Same thing I was thinking. He probably knows about Jan, maybe about Jackie too. He might not have connected the two.
He definitely has the two connected. There’s no way that he hasn’t caught it by now.
The probability that he’s seen news coverage of Miss Melee’s new sidekick approaches unity.
That, or his birthday’s coming up and he suspects a surprise party.
“Heh” indeed. He knows.
Guess Jan and Jackie aren’t the only ones who can keep secrets…
We’ll know for certain he knows when he adds sidekick handles to the Melee-cycle.
Does he know where Jan stashes the Melee-cycle when it isn’t in use? That seems like something he might not have bothered to figure out.
Well gee, I wonder what he could POSSIBLY be laughing about. I bet its the show he’s watching.
I think it’s obvious what he’s laughing at. With the women out of the house he can meet up with Scooby and the rest of the gang and solve them some mysteries.
Damned meddling kids
It’s just so hard to schedule mystery-solving after you all get out of school and start your new lives, you know what I mean?
Yeah, I think that Mark definitely knows. He also thinks that Jackie’s attempt to make excuses is kind of cute.
It’s either that he’s figured out his ladies’ secret or that he thinks Jackie is sneaking out to see a secret boyfriend/girlfriend
he’s figured out the secret. that’s the same “heh” he gave when Jan called him earlier.
So, what does everyone think: If Mark does know Jan’s secret, what’s the likelihood that the two of them are, at some point, going to succumb to the temptation of role-playing Miss Melee seducing her handsome mechanic and having a torrid affair behind his family’s back? HES HECCIN UP TA SOMETHING
Imagine if he was completely clueless…!
As a Dad,
If my wife wasn’t telling me about putting our child in potentially mortal danger I’d be pretty upset… He’s taking it pretty well!
Heck, he married a superhero – he doesn’t need his wife to tell him anything to know his daughter is gonna be of similar ilk. He is probably relieved they are working together – if Jackie was trying to vig on her own she’d be in much worse danger than with an experienced mentor by her side.
Jan’s blue.
Jackie’s purple.
Mark looks to be red.
Is Mark a former hero or anti-hero of some sort?
The general consensus is that he’s an ex-mad scientist/gadgeteer-for-hire who went straight after (a) developing a crush on Miss Melee and (b) because he felt it was inappropriate to continue with a fiancée and, later, a wife and a baby on the way.

No one with a beard *that* cool could possibly not be in the know. Especially with a grin like that. But yeah, it’s probably Beard power. 😛

Now he’s free to spend the evening being the secret supervillain he really is. 😉
There’s been a lot of sotto voce chuckling and shadowed eyes from Mark for there not to be some foreshadowing there, I agree.
Given that he seems to be a gadgeteer, I’m wondering if Mark has a power armour of some kind that he’s working on.
Yeah, totally! I can see the plot twist coming up… the villians are being sponsored / manipulated / supplied by some mastermind behind the scenes… who turns out to be Mark himself who has been on to the two, and has orchestrated the whole thing for laugh’s sake. Or something.
Going back to what I said in the comments for the previous page I think Mark knows but is willing to let Jan tell him when she’s ready to.
I would love for it to come out he knows their secret in like this super casual way. Like, the girls come back one day/night after superheroing and he’s like “Saw the battle on tv. He knows…the father knows!!! OI VEY!!!
He obviously knows the two ladies in his life are superheroes but the question I have is: how much longer is he gonna milk this before he calls them out on it
HE KNOOOWS!!!!
Actually either he’s totally oblivious (most likely),
a villain (unlikely),
or he actually does know (could be).
OH he absolutely knows
