So she’s planning to train her and (at least for now) still hide her identity from her? Well, she better get out of the habit of calling her Jackie then.
I think yes, and no. It’s a sorting mechanism; if Jackie doesn’t really want to be a hero — I think that it’s pretty clear that she does, but her mom can’t read her thoughts the way that we can — better that she finds that out about herself early. So they’re going to test her; just not to destruction.
I agree with Moe. It’ll introduce her to the less glamorous aspects of the trade, make her work for it. The training will serve multiple purposes:
1. Protect Jackie: Who better to protect someone than themselves? Even if she decides against going further, she’ll be safer with training than without. One of the early lessons is usually “how to fall.”
2: Discipline: Combat training usually instills discipline & (within limits) obedience. You obey your teacher & those your teacher sets above you; this gives Jan a boost in protecting Jackie in the field (eventually), because Jackie will at least listen to orders.
3: Learn or Leave Decision: Jan can make completing the training a mandatory condition of becoming a sidekick; we know Jackie will stick, but Jan may not.
4: Objectivity: It will give Rimi, who fought beside Jan for years, a good idea of how Jackie’s style will mesh with Jan’s; Rimi’s close enough to have good insight, but not so close as to be unable to maintain objectivity in her judgment of how Jackie is measuring up.
5: Measuring: Rimi can get Jackie’s measurements as part of the training, and get her custom combat armor easily.
It also allows Rimi to partially come out of retirement without dropping her right into a firefight (she’s a mother with young kids, after all).
Firearms? Doubtful. First, any weapon you have in hand can be taken away & used against you; that’s an amazingly lethal tool to hand someone else. Second, it’s really hard to be certain you won’t kill someone with a bullet (barring extreme skill, which is a long-term training regimen by itself). Third, “Kid Melee.” That said, some training in their use might be a good idea. Additionally, other weapons have other uses, making them more useful in a broader variety of situations. I think Kid Melee will end up with more of a hand-to-hand style, augmented by gadgets.
I really like this idea!
Continuing the thought might be a bit mean though.
Jan: “I’m not so certain about your mother, though…”
Jackie would then be in a position of having to defend her mother (to her mother).
I suppose it’s possible that ‘Auntie Rimi’ is known to Jackie but there is no possibility that such a normal person could be the extroverted and dramatic Osakan Riot!
I’ll certainly agree that knowing about ‘Auntie Rimi’ is very likely. It’s possible (I won’t go so far as likely, certainly) that Jackie has never met her, or not often. We just don’t know. My earlier thought may well be wrong, though. Certainly, Jackie doesn’t recognize her mother in Miss Melee, so she might completely miss seeing Rimi in Osakan Riot.
I expected the trainer would be Osakan Riot. I approve of this trainer. I think it’ll be tough for Jackie, but she’ll be stubborn enough to push through.
Prediction: Jan is going to have lots of cheap laughs over the next few weeks observing Jackie nursing aching muscles and a sore rump or two from the training regimen and trying to keep the cause secret from her ‘ordinary, boring mom’.
YES! Perfect start of training. Exactly in Osakan’s character.
A trainer! Don’t lock eyes with her Jackie, you don’t even have any Pokemon yet!
Ah, more R. Lee Ermey than Mr. Miyagi… This is the stuff of legends.
R. Lee Miyagi. Wax on wax off maggot!
I just died laughing when I heard that in my head.
Jackie furiously polishes her combat boots.
So she’s planning to train her and (at least for now) still hide her identity from her? Well, she better get out of the habit of calling her Jackie then.
I hope this is no attempt to discourage Jackie from being a hero…!

Amazingly well said.
Will there be weapons training as well,or not due to Jackie being underage?!?
Can you picture Kid Melee with a lock and load .45???

Ah, the epic ‘unhloading the truck’ montage. *nods sagely*
“How do you know where I live?”
“Your dad works on my bike and I background check everyone who my life depends on.”
I really like this idea!

Makes me wonder: does Jackie know Rimi? I’m thinking not.
I suppose it’s possible that ‘Auntie Rimi’ is known to Jackie but there is no possibility that such a normal person could be the extroverted and dramatic Osakan Riot!
Very doubtful that Rimi hasn’t been a part of Jackie’s life up to this point with how close she is to Janice.

This is gonna be good.
I wonder if she freaks her kids out with all those fangs she’s sporting O.O
Might be a custom mouth protector.

*puts Eye of the Tiger on infinite loop*
You beat me to my comment since I’m behind by a couple weeks! I guess we can add “Gonna Fly Now (Rocky Theme)” to the mix.
Jackie looks inside and sees a lot of boxes and says, “Some assembly required!”
Spake Osakan Riot: “Lesson number 1, Shrimp: The world is full of asses who will exploit you for their own benefit if they let you.”
