That was the sentiment I always get from it. It is not trying to be credible, it is echoing a specific style of lighthearted superhero comic, part of which includes the belief that wearing a mask makes you impossible to identify.
(A year late! Sorry!) Actually Rune, domino masks are VERY effective at hiding true identities! As a cosplayer, it makes it VERY difficult to recognize people in and out of costume if done right. The mask hides a lot of what we use to identify each other by at a glance; facial structure, blemishes…sometimes eye color. Maybe even nose shape if it’s molded over the nose instead of around it.
They aren’t PERFECT, but masks are really effective!
Am I the only one who, without knowing who she as in the first place, could easily sleuth out who she is? Even in this universe where no one can see through the mask?
Imagine if the guys MM and something Riot over heard her saying that her daughter dressed up like a super and tried to be her sidekick. One quick look through Facebook and you could find all the people who claimed to be saved by MM and then ask around until they got to the people who she rescued when Jackie showed up. And they definitely knew who she was because Jackie took her mask OFF and then SAID HER FULL NAME OUT LOUD, and then to REALLY narrow it down she specifically states that she was the best gymnast in the state! One quick Google search later and BAM you know whom Miss Melee is.
*snrk* and Miss Melee disappears for another 15 years, and all the cities major criminals form a council to figure out what kind of game she’s playing with them.
Haven’t you ever heard the little used trope of inner deniability? Yeah he knows, but he’s in denial about it and refuses to admit it even to himself. Also you noticed in gym class how all the kids have it figured out and her own daughter is in denial over her being Miss Melee. They of course buy it because her daughter would know if she was a hero or not, wouldn’t she? As for that supposed school project, nope, its not. I think it might be something to allow her to move faster, like maybe rocket skates, or some other such device. Its obvious because of her athletic abilities that she inherited her mother’s moves, but again it seems that she also inherited her father’s mechanical skills as well. Miss Melee kicked her to the side, so she may decide to go into the business on her own and prove she has the stuff to do the work. In essence showing Miss Melee that she is a candidate for sidekick. In her place, since I write hero stuff myself, that’s what I would do.
Nice romantic move, but for me the story is losing credibility with every new week…
No comic anywhere has any credibility
i get the sentiment but dont be too harsh on this thing here, seems just like a really light hearted goofy comic they got going.

If the basic silver age comics tropes bother you, then maybe this isn’t the comic for you.
No offense, but I get tired of typing this out. Masks that somehow work to hide identities, even pairs of glasses, are just part of the genre tropes.
Let it go.

Unless, he knows and he’s playing her.
Think about it. She’s been keeping a secret from him. He finds out. So he uses it to his advantage.
Considering the story started with a ninja clan from Brazil mugging a carnival, exactly how much credibility did it have to begin with?
I think the fact that you fidelity less than credible says more about you than it does about the comic.
This page is sweet. 🙂
Aww! This is adorable!
I want to know who that Moose Man from the last page is.
dawww
Am I the only one who, without knowing who she as in the first place, could easily sleuth out who she is? Even in this universe where no one can see through the mask?
No. You only think that because you’re an outside reader, not someone actually in the situation.
Endalrin is right.
We have the benefit of an outside view, the characters in the story don’t have the editorial insight we are allowed as outside observers.

The people she rescued left before Jackie revealed her identity, though. They wouldn’t know.
That should totally happen. Vote! Make someone a non idiot and have them Sherlock Holmes her identity!
Eh. It’s been done in the comics. [It’s still exceedingly rare there for a reason.]
Robin 3 [Tim Drake] figured out who Batman was by sleuthing it, and used this info to schmooze his way into the robin gig and a lifetime of crap.
… Jackie could end up with a sibling if he keeps talking like that with her.

Someone is getting lucky
I love the post-action normal life drama in this comic.
I actually wonder if he knows and only plays dumb. That face on the last panel suggests it, as well as the perfect dialog.
Though that last bit could be of a piece with the “can’t tell that’s Superman through those glasses” trope that silver age comics love so much.
I think he does know. The real question is why doesn’t he tell Janice?
Brown Chicken Brown Cow!

It really means something when someone prefers you over you.
I LOVE when comics or cartoons aren’t afraid to show a good marriage!!
