Generic Crook got through a fight with a name hero while conscious enough to stand upright, and now has photographic evidence to prove it. Hopefully he thinks to get Kid Melee’s Instagram so he can show it to his fellow thugs in the holding cell later. ๐
As for the Midnight Owl, he needs to train more. At least in how to take a punch, because judging from the time stamps, he went down in one. I mean, even the likes of Mad Hatter or Riddler can last longer than ONE MINUTE before they’re face down on the ground. If nothing else, he needs to learn to keep the hero distracted from getting into punching range.
On the other hand, this might have been the best for Kid Melee’s first patrol. You don’t want A-List costumed criminals on your first day.
Just in case anyone was wondering, this is where ‘the night led’ them’.
Panel 1 and 3 suggests that there is a bit of on-the-job training, including Miss Melee’s patented ‘roll eyes in disgust whilst cold-cocking a mugger’.
I’m getting the feeling that this setting is a bit like the city in ‘Mystery Men’. Literally everyone with an ambition or a chip on their shoulder is putting on a costume and trying to become a superhero or supervillain. Such as the Midnight Owl (he of the glass jaw).
“I am the Midnight Owl! It is my time. I can not be defeated!”
“Have looked at the time? You are 4 hours past your ‘time of power’. Do you want to do this the hard way or the easy way?”
“You will never capture me!”
“The hard way it is.”
…
“Ow.”
In the 11:45 panel, is the person Kid Melee hitting in the back of the head a woman, or is it a guy with a really loose shirt on his chest? Also, when effecting an arrest, after the person is no longer a viable threat, any further use of force can be considered assault, which would include both 11:45 and 2:51. In my jurisdiction, it is called “Excessive use of Force”.
At 11:45 I’m guessing that’s a muscular woman, as I’m pretty sure those are boobs, and the waistline/hip area looks rather feminine as well. And just because she’s dropped to her knees doesn’t necessarily mean she’s incapacitated yet; considering she trains with Osaka Riot, I’m surprised Kid Melee didn’t hit her with a shining wizard.
At 2:51 they’re using submission holds, intended for restraint, not outright damage. Also, they’re vigilantes, not police officers (although some canon material suggests Miss Melee has at least unofficial endorsement by the city government), so “excessive force” is a rather relative term.
To me 11:45 looks like the Melees hit the muggers hard enough to knock them unconscious (which is actually really dangerous since “unconscious” and “dead” aren’t always very far apart in head injury terms), and the muggers both fell on their knees on the way down.
Agreed. Note also that the male mugger’s knife is still in the air after he dropped it, it’s barely out of his hand. At the time those thumps were launched, the thumpees were still viable threats.
Yup. Also: superhero comic in superhero world. That last was more a generic observation, because at some point *somebody* will point that out, so it might as well be me. ๐
Little do they realize that this is the 4:16am Owl. The Midnight Owl is another guy.
Midnight Owl shall be remembered in his two panels of fame.
Looks like he could be a reacquiring joke villain.
“He once cornered Osakan Riot and demanded that she ‘punish him’.”
“What happened?”
“She dropped him down a lift shaft. I think that this must have been his first weekend out of a body cast.”
Sure, just plagiarize the Watchmen, only the most well-known piece of super-hero inspired literature ever written.
Nobody will call you on it.

Is that a Salvadora cameo I spy?
Good eye!
Does Salvadora exist in the same universe as Miss Melee?
Many have Kid Melee get trained by any of the Grrl Power characters!?
It’s just a little background cameo.
I like how 1:39 Generic Crook is posing for the photo as wellโฆ
Also, the Midnight Owl was clearly up past his bedtime – no wonder he got defeated so quickly.

this one was worth it being late.
the villain giving the peace sign was funny, and is that a Watchmen reference I see?
More like “The Midnight OW”, amirite?
Dan Dreiberg should be suing for copyright infringement!

I actually feel sorry for the guy in panel 3, lol.
Yeah… I get the impression that he wasn’t expecting to be a practice dummy that night!
